The Sea Gypsies Documentary I 2019 I 20m33s I Hong Kong, Malaysia, Sweden Producer: Hing Weng Eric Tsang, Dora Choi, Erik Abrahamsson Director: Lau Kok Rui In Sabah of Malaysia, there is a group of sea nomads called Bajau Laut. They live on the sea for at least a thousand year and seldom step on the land. Nevertheless, the modern society doesn’t appreciate their vagrancy, they remain stateless until today. They have to be cautious when they fish, in order to avoid the marine police. As a result, the life on the sea is getting difficult for them. Many Bajau Lauts abandon the traditional lifestyle and move to the land. Three Bajau Laut families have developed into three completely different lifestyles. Given the impact of modernisation, what is the future of these sea gypsies?

Ear Up Music Global is a project that aims to further incubate emerging Hong Kong indie music talents. The music project offers musicians the opportunity to perform on a global music stage while developing an international network and exposure. The selected participants will be matched with other experienced musicians in a mentor / mentee relationship. Each group will engage in a number of cultural exchange activities with music professionals and institutions of the visiting city including a performance at an international music festival. Upon returning to Hong Kong, all groups will have a sharing session on their experience and performance at a music festival.

“Tongqi” is a Chinese language neologism for women who have married gay men. To continue the family bloodline is one of the most important values to a traditional Chinese family. Most gay men will choose to marry a woman as requested by parents. According to Professor Zhang Bei-Chuan, there are around 14 million “Tongqi” in China. Most of them have no idea about the homosexual identity of their partners until their first child was born. Some of them will even not be informed until the end of their life. Teresa from Wuhan was once a “Tongqi”. Her husband came out to her two months after their wedding. In this documentary, Teresa shares her experience of being a “Tongqi” and how it changed her life. Fortunately, her “Tongqi” experience does not ruin her life. In contrary, she chooses to dedicate her life to help other “Tongqi” to walk out of darkness. “Tongqi is living beneath a roof of ice,” said by Professor Zhang Bei-Chuan. Nearly none of them is willing to share their story to public openly. However, Teresa is determined to do so, with the hope that she can be the last “Tongqi” in history. This year’s Lantern Festival in Quanzhou, Teresa, dressed in a pink cheongsam, walking on the street to promote “Tongqi” to thousands of public. Feedback from the crowd is diverse. Some clapped to encourage, while some yelled to fight back. All of the above is the story of Teresa, one of the 14 million “Tongqi” in China.

一個支撐七口之家的爸爸和丈夫，要在香港成爲藝術家，得經歷怎麽樣的思考和掙扎？ 承蒙旭日基金贊助，文物館與中大新聞與傳播學院首次㩗手合作，把呂壽琨親撰的"遇僧記"手稿及精選情節以鏡頭與畫面重現，展現藝術家於藝術追求與家庭責任之間的掙扎，讓公眾從多角度認識呂氏的藝術人生。 "遇僧記" 收錄於"呂壽琨手稿"，是一個夢中遇僧的故事。在夢中，"我"渴望出家以求清靜，專心追求畫道，卻遭到僧人責難。短片於碼頭取景，除了與呂氏曾於渡輪公司任職有關外，亦因為"渡"這個概念。 此短片由香港獨立導演曾慶宏執導，黃衍仁設計聲音與創作音樂，黃漢樑、藍嘉穎編舞，更有幸邀得呂氏高足及著名設計師靳埭強博士聯同舞者黃漢樑演出。從呂壽琨到靳埭強博士再到一群不同界別的年輕本地藝術家，影片可謂一次跨時代、跨界別的嘗試，亦有傳承的意味。 How much struggle does it take for the breadwinner of a family of seven to pursue his artistic dreams in a place like Hong Kong? With the generous support of the GS Charity Foundation, for the very first time, the Art Museum has joint hands with the School of Journalism & Communication, CUHK to present a video about the struggle for art of Lui Shou-kwan, father of new ink art in Hong Kong. The video “Meeting with Monk” is based on a piece with the same title written by the artist himself, collected in the book “Manuscripts of Lui Shou-kwan”. It tells a dream of a painter who wishes to take up the tonsure in order to paint wholeheartedly but is rebuffed by a monk. Set in a pier, which is a reference to Lui’s stint at a ferry company, the video emblematizes Lui’s rite of passage. The video is directed by a local young director Eric Tsang, with sound design and music by Wong Hin Yan. The monk featured is Dr. Kan Tai-keung, a renowned designer who studied under Lui while Wilfred Wong participated as the dancer and the co-choreographer of Blue Ka Wing. The video is thus a product of creativity by Hong Kong artists of different generations and different fields.
